VOTE 2026: Ballot filling up for May primaries in local seats

|

|

Three County Commission seats are on the ballot for the 2026 local election cycle, and three school board seats as well, along with a State Court judge seat for the Paulding County Judicial Circuit.

So far, two of the races for County Commission will be contested, and one of the school board races will go to November for decision on the ballot with a Democrat and GOP candidate on the ballot.

A three-way race has developed for the Post 2 County Commission seat, featuring Jeff Cole, David Dial and Wendell Purvis, who are all challenging for the seat.

Post 3 Commissioner Virginia Galloway will seek to keep her seat on the GOP ticket, but no matter what she’ll face a November challenge from a Democratic candidate who qualified this week. Taurus Madric will seek the seat as a challenger in the race.

Currently, GOP incumbent Dean Schneider has no challenger for the Post 4 County Commission seat.

The School Board also has a contested November race. Republican Shane Miller and Democrat Rhonda Williams have qualified for the District 2 Paulding County BoE seat. Neither has a challenger in their primary as of information shared from Paulding’s Elections and Voter Registration office this morning.

District 5’s seat includes Republican Jeff Byrd, and District 6 features GOP candidate Tara Buzzelli – both challengers in the race.

One judicial seat is open for a state court judge, and Mason Rountree is seeking the seat as a non-partisan candidate.

Expect additional names to be added to the ballot through the remainder of the week before qualifying closes out for the May primaries Friday at noon.

A new set of speed cameras has police officials hoping that drivers will slow down when they are going through the area of Dallas Elementary School, per a release from the city department on Monday.

The new cameras put up around Dallas Elementary went active on Monday and a 30-day advanced notification period for driver’s traveling through the school zone on weekday mornings when school is in session for the start of the 2026-27 school year will be posted ahead of time as a reminder.

Cameras operating who spot drivers going 10+ miles an hour over the speed limit will be sent tickets via a partnership with RedSpeed to install and operate the new cameras.

The department said it wasn’t meant to be a punitive measure against drivers, but hopes instead it’ll act as a preventative for speeders and get them to slow down and protect students and staff during peak hours when traffic is heavier.

“Driving above the posted speed limit in school zones puts pedestrians, especially young children, at a much greater risk of serious harm,” the release from the department noted.

The cameras will be looking for drivers 1 hour before the start of the school day, an hour after the first bell, then an hour before and an hour after dismissal on weekdays.

Signage is also being installed to warn drivers of cameras and encourage them to slow down before reaching the school district.

Those who are caught speeding will be mailed citations after the release promises that a “thorough review” of any citations before they are sent.
