A man will be facing serious time in prison he was convicted of multiple child molestation-related crimes last week.

Per a release from District Attorney Robert S. Lane, a jury found 64-year-old William Prather of Dallas could face life imprisonment for aggravated sexual battery, child molestation, false imprisonment and sexual exploitation of children to conclude a trial on February 13.

Prather was convicted of crimes in Judge Ralph Van Pelt’s courtroom stemming from a late May 2023 incident after a 12-year old told their guardian they were sexually assaulted by the older man. The Paulding County Sheriff’s Office investigated the incident, and it was tried by Assistant District Attorney Deidra Alexander and Senior Assistant District Attorney John Tully.

“During the four day trial, the victim bravely testified alongside lead detective Chad Murphy (PCSO – Crimes Against Children Unit),” the release noted from Lane.

The jury took a day to deliberate on the conviction for seven counts in total.

“After a year of steady leadership, rebuilding, and focused training, these convictions are becoming the norm — not the exception. This office is committed to protecting children, holding predators accountable, and restoring trust in our justice system,” Lane said in the release. “Justice will be delivered in Paulding County. We are ‘Probation Paulding’ no more. Our office remains steadfast in its mission: to seek truth, do justice, and protect the most vulnerable among us.”

Prather could spend the rest of his life behind bars depending on how the sentence is determined, with a life sentence possible for the aggravated sexual battery charge, plus at least five years for each count of child molestation, at least a year for false imprisonment and at least five years for each count of sexual exploitation of a child.

Judge Van Pelt will determine how long Prather will spend in prison in a follow-up hearing after a pre-sentencing report is completed.
