Willing to take a cold plunge for a good cause?

Paulding Public Safety Appreciation is set to host the 2026 edition of the Paulding County Polar Bear Plunge coming up on Saturday, February 7.

The event is scheduled for 8 a.m. at Rountree Recreation at 172 Shipp Circle in Hiram. Registration to participate is $40 ahead of the event, and $50 on Feb. 7.

Those who don’t want to have to dip into frigid waters can instead stand on the sidelines and watch.

The event being co-hosted by the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office has an additional twist this year: for every 10 school-based participants that sign up to take the plunge, that school’s resource officer will have to jump in as well.

Proceeds from signups go to help the Special Olympics with their annual event in held in April.

Several Elementary School students from campuses around Paulding County went up to Rome ahead of the snowy weekend, and some came back as region champs representing their campuses.

The regional event held in Rome for the Georgia Student Technology Competition organized by Georgia’s RESA organization saw dozens of area schools compete against one another for a chance to move onto the state level on March 14.

The nearly two dozen students included youth from W.C. Abney Elementary School, Connie Dugan Elementary School, Hal Hutchens Elementary School, Sam D. Panter Elementary School, and Shelton Elementary School.

Students from Shelton Elementary took first place in three different categories during the event, along with Dugan Elementary students who took first in two categories, and a Panter Elementary team taking first in a category as well.

Those who won will get to compete on the state level next month in McDonough.
