A Dallas man will spend the rest of his life behind bars after he was sentenced in mid-January on multiple charges including rape and child molestation.

Jaylen A. McCrary, 22, was found guilty by a jury to conclude a trial on rape, aggravated child molestation, and four counts of violations of the Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act on January 15.

McCrary was initially charged in the case in November 2021 after the victim reported a sexual assault to the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office.

The four-day trial included the “brave” testimony from the victim, per a press release about the conviction and sentencing from the District Attorney’s office.

“Rape and child molestation are among the most insidious crimes we prosecute. They rob victims—especially children—of their innocence and their sense of safety,” said District Attorney Robert S. Lane in the release. “This conviction and sentence make clear that in Paulding County, rapists and child molesters will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. I am proud of the victim’s courage and grateful for the tireless work of law enforcement and Senior ADA Jill Hartsfield, who ensured accountability in this case.”

Judge Dean C. Bucci sentenced McCrary to life imprisonment, plus an additional 80 years to serve in confinement with the Georgia Department of Corrections.

The case was investigated by the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Senior Assistant District Attorney Jill Hartsfield and Assistant District Attorney Christina Morgan Young of the Paulding Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office.

Several Elementary School students from campuses around Paulding County went up to Rome ahead of the snowy weekend, and some came back as region champs representing their campuses.

The regional event held in Rome for the Georgia Student Technology Competition organized by Georgia’s RESA organization saw dozens of area schools compete against one another for a chance to move onto the state level on March 14.

The nearly two dozen students included youth from W.C. Abney Elementary School, Connie Dugan Elementary School, Hal Hutchens Elementary School, Sam D. Panter Elementary School, and Shelton Elementary School.

Students from Shelton Elementary took first place in three different categories during the event, along with Dugan Elementary students who took first in two categories, and a Panter Elementary team taking first in a category as well.

Those who won will get to compete on the state level next month in McDonough.
