Fire & Rescue get equipped with new Advanced Life Support Engine

|

|

A new vehicle in the first responder fleet is providing a new tool to bring critical care into the field for patients who need immediate care.

Paulding County Fire & Rescue introduced ALS Engine 13, the first of its kind in the fleet with equipment onboard that provides Advanced Life Support when arriving on the scene of an emergency.

Everything from LIFEPAK 35 monitors to paramedics onboard provide Engine 13 – one of the county’s Fire Engines sent out to emergency situations alongside fires – now have what it needs to treat emergency medical patients with what could be lifesaving care.

The effort is made possible not only through an investment made by Paulding County into Advanced Life Support systems in emergency vehicles, but a partnership with Metro EMS to put paramedics in the fire engine to ensure the equipment and tools within are being used during thousands of calls per year for medical emergencies and saving patients from what otherwise could be fatal incidents.

“ALS Engine 13 enhances our ability to deliver lifesaving medical care directly to our citizens as quickly as possible,” said Fire Chief Garrett Brubaker in a press release announcing the new capabilities on Thursday. “As our call volume continues to grow, expanding ALS capabilities is essential to keep pace with the needs of our community—not just with rescue units, but now with fire engines as well.”

The county’s Emergency Medical Services operations is overseen by Capt. Lisa Lewis, and she noted much of the work that firefighters are doing around the community will utilize Engine 13’s capabilities more.

“Medical emergencies account for the majority of our call volume, especially in some of the busiest parts of the county,” Lewis said. “By adding ALS capabilities to a frontline engine, we can deliver advanced interventions faster and more reliably, even when rescue units are busy. This upgrade directly improves patient outcomes countywide.”

A lot of focus is on the LIFEPAK 35 monitors on the engine, which provide upgraded capabilities for monitoring vital signs and the ability to transmit that data to help with patient care in critical situations.

The new monitors are part of an overall strategy alongside other equipment on-board the engine and paramedics onboard from Metro EMS to increase patient care in the field before they are loaded onto ambulances and taken to the hospital, including administering medication, airway management, and other interventions usually provided after an ambulance arrives.

However response times might be longer for a ambulance than the ALS Engine now starting in the fleet, meaning that someone having a serious medical emergency gains an increased chance of a positive outcome. It joins three other Rescue units already implementing the equipment upgrades utilizing the ALS strategies.

Paulding County is one of a few counties around Georgia to start including equipment and personnel within the fire department vehicles with the ultimate goal of saving more lives and providing quality care before sending patients off to the hospital.
