Bridge work requiring detour from Morningside Drive

|

|

Work to replace a bridge over Morningside Drive began last week, and will continue until July requiring a detour for drivers who are used to using the roadway to move past major thoroughfares.

Folks who live on Morningside Drive on either side of the bridge will still be able to access neighborhoods and driveways along the road, but a detour is now in place until July when the work is expected to be completed.

The old bridge over Mill Creek was found to be structurally deficient during the 2010s, and work began on preliminary engineering with FY 2018 to look at a replacement option.

By the time the project is completed, it will have cost $5.8 million to complete.

Drivers will need to detour around the closure on either side of Morningside Drive using Bill Carruth Parkway using SR 92 or Morris Road to get to-and-from neighborhoods along the road.

Otherwise, those who are using the area to maneuver around major thoroughfares will have to utilize the detours for the time being.

The new bridge features a 2 65-foot long, 42.25-foot wide span over Mill Creek that will consist of one 12-foot lane in each direction with 8.5-foot shoulders and sidewalks, per the project information provided by the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Officials expect the project to take around 210 days (weather permitting) and should be open back to the public by July 26, 2026.

Several Elementary School students from campuses around Paulding County went up to Rome ahead of the snowy weekend, and some came back as region champs representing their campuses.

The regional event held in Rome for the Georgia Student Technology Competition organized by Georgia’s RESA organization saw dozens of area schools compete against one another for a chance to move onto the state level on March 14.

The nearly two dozen students included youth from W.C. Abney Elementary School, Connie Dugan Elementary School, Hal Hutchens Elementary School, Sam D. Panter Elementary School, and Shelton Elementary School.

Students from Shelton Elementary took first place in three different categories during the event, along with Dugan Elementary students who took first in two categories, and a Panter Elementary team taking first in a category as well.

Those who won will get to compete on the state level next month in McDonough.
